Lighting of the Lawn 2010
Lighting of the Lawn 2010 was an immense success, and we are very grateful for the support of the Parents Committee in helping us make the event possible. On the night of December 2nd, we had a clear, but cold, evening, giving us the perfect atmosphere to celebrate the winter tradition. Thousands of students came and were accompanied by many members of the Charlottesville community and U.Va. faculty and staff.
During the program, an introduction was given by Professor Ed Burton, Economics, and the Class of 2011 President John Buttram. Each a cappella group sang two-three songs and the program ran very smoothly thanks to their cooperation and our committee. The class poem was read by Dean Bill Wilson and Professor Marcia Pentz, Commerce. We received great reviews about both the readers and the poem itself, receiving many inquiries on how students could obtain copies of the poem!
Every lawn room but one held a reception for various student organizations. Each school held a reception, including Law, Medicine and Darden in lawn rooms volunteered by undergrad students. The architecture school and nursing schools also congregated in lawn rooms, while the Engineering, Education, Commerce and College met in the pavilions. UVa and Charlottesville community members also enjoyed receptions at the Colonnade Club, Bob Sweeny’s reception for Development and Professor Sabato’s reception for the center of politics. The fourth year class reception was incredibly popular and had a constant flow of visitors looking for their class gift, an engraved beer stein, and to see Pavilion V’s many Christmas decorations.
There were no injuries or vandalisms to report, and we feel as though the event was a huge success. We are eternally grateful to all four class councils who helped set up, volunteer during the event, and serve on the Lighting of the Lawn committee. In addition to this, we are extremely grateful to all the organizations that provided us funding, making the event possible. UVa Catering did a terrific job, and as always the event was made possible because of the cooperation with facilities. The additional lighting of Cabell hall, which was paid for by the Parent’s Committee grant, added a new feel that looked beautiful when the lawn was lit. UPC also added an interesting element by providing ice sculptures at the south end of the upper lawn.
It truly was a special night for all those who attended. The lawn looked spectacular at night through the beginning of January. Attached is our final budget, as well as many pictures and the evenings program. The event was also featured on the NBC 29 evening news as well as by the e-letter edition of the Virginia magazine. Please contact either co-chair with any questions! Thank you again!
